Phone services over the Internet is not just a fad these days, but a way of life. You log on to the Internet, connect to the server of the service provider using the software they provide you and place or receive calls from there. There are broadband Internet phone services based on hardware in which you do not have to rely on your computer and go through a lengthy process to make a call.

In these hardware based broadband phone services, the service provider bundles all various added features like in any regular phone services. These features include caller ID, call waiting, voice mail boxes, conference call service and the like.

Another reason for the popularity of broadband Internet phone service, and perhaps the more effective one, is the price. Increasing numbers of people all over the world are using broadband Internet phone services to make long distance phone calls, because long distance calls are very cheap with Internet phone services compared to regular phone service. On top of that, there are broadband Internet phone service providers who also offer free calls generated between the users of the same service provider.

There are a few conditions for using your broadband Internet phone effectively. You cannot use broadband connections with a dial-up Internet connection. You need a high-speed Internet connection. There is the issue of viruses too. Because it is the Internet, a virus can travel to your phone too. And, no matter what quality enhancements the Internet phone service has acquired over time, it still cannot match the clarity and sound quality of the regular phone lines.
