In the United States, companies that offer internet and cable TV also tend to offer internet phone services as well. And most times you can find a pretty great package deal that offers all three services for one flat rate. The internet phone is not just cheap but can offer multiple functionalities too. Although there was some initial perception that the Voice Over Internet Protocol might not be able to deliver good quality sound for the users that doubt has long been proven to be baseless.

Internet phone services are now commonly used in millions of homes across the world. But the service has also been quite popular within the business community. And to accommodate both these clientele bases, the service providers have developed very competitive rates.

There were also initial worries that internet phones posed the risk of not being locatable by emergency centers. But to counter the risk, service providers now offer the Enhanced 911, or E911, service. What this feature means is that when a person calls 911, it automatically gets routed to the nearest emergency center in the area. This feature comes built in with some service providers and must be added on for others. The government has made it mandatory for service providers who don't offer that feature as default to make the disclaimer of that fact clear in writing to their clients.

There is no doubt that one of the biggest reasons to the internet phone's success was the fact that it allowed phone calls to be made for a cheaper rate than conventional phones. Especially when it came to making long distance calls. However, over the years many other features and conveniences offered by the service has helped the growth of the internet phone service industry.
