Fixed Wireless Broadband - Eliminating Barriers

Can a fixed wireless broadband service fulfill your needs? It is certainly on the rise regardless of the problems associated with it. Fixed wireless broadband is also known as, a wireless DSL or broadband wireless local loop. Wireless DSL was designed originally as an alternative to the standard cable TV connection. Instead of using standard wires, poles, and underground, wireless uses microwave transceivers to transmit video, data and voice to customer's homes. It has advantages and disadvantages, and some significant hurdles to overcome.

The first advantage to wireless broadband is the reduced cost for suppliers. It is not necessary to lay wire, saving costs on materials and manpower. There are no land issues associated when there are no wire requirements. Providers do not have to pay easements to land owners to lay wire under or over their property. Architectural modifications can give new buildings increased coverage by eliminating barriers through smart design. One huge advantage for business is there are no licensing requirements involved. The hurdles are many but as with all new technology the high demand from consumers and businesses push problem solving into overdrive. As of now there are not a great many manufacturers for the necessary equipment leading to higher prices. Service is limited to concentrated urban areas as the wireless cells are small and have a limited range. Trees, bad weather and tall buildings degrade the signal. These problems need to have large companies and a lot of research money behind them which is made more difficult by recent events that have stifled consolidation of companies. The good news for all of us is these are only hurdles not impossibilities. International markets will probably see the most growth in fixed wireless broadband due to inadequate wireless telecom markets.

Another bit of good news about wireless DSL is as you read this more and more vendors are coming on board. The possibilities are endless and manufacturers are starting to deliver improved products already. There are rural cities in the US and China embracing this technology and deploying it on a large scale to provide service to areas that cannot get high speed internet or DSL service. The industry is fully aware that wireless needs to go above and beyond cable and DSL so don't expect them to settle for less. There are plenty of industry heavyweights who realize what they are sitting on and they are going to push for heavy investment.

Have you ever wished you could have gotten in on the bottom of some exciting new discovery? This may be it. Fixed wireless broadband is in its infant stage and the possibilities are so exciting and not just for the Western world. There are going to be opportunities to bring communication to remote places that are lagging in technology and need an inexpensive alternative. The next time you are sitting at your computer surfing the web, begging it to go faster, remember, help is around the corner. After the spread of fixed wireless broadband the old days of dial up, cable and DSL will be distant memories that we would just soon forget.
